French press without the sludge

Most people press too early and too hard, and end up with a muddy, bitter cup. Wait longer, skim the crust, and let gravity do the work.

Why it works

After four minutes, break the crust and skim the foam with two spoons. Then wait five more minutes and press only to the surface of the coffee.

Step by step

  1. Coarse grind, like sea salt.
  2. Steep 4 minutes, skim, wait 5 more.
  3. Press gently, just to the surface, and pour slowly.

Brew recipe

French press without the sludge

Coffee 30 g

Water 500 g

Ratio 1:16,7

Grind coarse

Temperature 94 °C

Time 4:00 + 5:00

The press is a waiting game.
